On my latest trip to Goodwill I came across this frog tape dispenser.  This little guy was painted in primary colors and sporting a red bow tie.  Newbie blogger here forgot to take a before pic…so you’ll have to take my word for it!  He was atrocious!

I gave him a little Annie Sloan loving and now he’s gorgeous.  I layered Paris Gray and Florence Chalk Paint, hit him with a little Clear Wax, and then finished up with little touches of Silver and King Gold Gilding Wax.

I just love him!  What do you think?

So many posts and pins have cropped up lately where jute is used to update all sorts of things.  Like here and here.

I have used this cheapo desk lamp for about a year and have planned to buy something nicer in the future.  Thankfully for my wallet, inspiration–with a little help from Pinterest :) –hit and I decided to dress this plain little guy up.

I gathered my supplies and got busy.

  • Clear Gel Tacky Glue
    • clear glue was key because this project was a ‘lil messy
  • Jute Twine
    • I used #530 x 190′ but you can use any size that you like
  • Old beat up coaster with a beveled edge
  • Small basket-”lampshade” shaped
  • Painter’s tape
  • Brown spray paint

I began by prepping my lamp with painter’s tape being careful to tape off the glass covering the light bulb and the small crevice surrounding the on button.  In retrospect, I would also tape the black rod to avoid accidentally spraying it.  I  sprayed the white plastic with a couple of coats of spray paint to avoid show-through; if the jute gaped slightly, and then I let it dry overnight.

After removing the tape, I began spreading glue on the base and coiling the jute tightly.  I tried to avoid overlapping to keep it neat.   I continued to do this until I got to the adjustment piece at the base and then began cutting pieces to length and gluing it while maintaining the circular pattern.   It was difficult to avoid overlap on the actual black height adjustment piece at the base but did the best I could.  When finished, I used my fingers to cover the entire base with a thin coat of glue and smoothed the jute in one direction to smooth down fibers sticking up due to tacky fingers.

Then I covered the top and bottom of the “lampshade”basket with several coils of jute.  I kept the edge above and below the jute uncovered for a bit of interest.  The basket was a perfect fit on the top of the lamp and did not need brackets to attach it.  I just popped it right on top.

I just love the final product!  I think it turned out pretty sassy!  What do you think? :)
